History of the Family Name

The history of the Kalayathinal family is a long and meaningful journey that goes back many centuries. It is closely connected with the history of the St. Thomas Christian community of Kerala. Our family story has been passed down from one generation to another through oral tradition, family records and written documents. It reflects the strong faith, unity and values of our ancestors.

Our Family Tradition

According to our family tradition, the Kalayathinal family traces its roots to the ancient Ammiyanikkal family, which is believed to have existed nearly 2,000 years ago.

One of the oldest stories in our family tells how the Ammiyanikkal name came into being.

It is said that during his missionary journey in Kerala, St. Thomas the Apostle was walking through this area one evening when he heard people repeatedly saying the word “Amen” while praying in a nearby house. Curious to know who was praying, he entered the house and found a Jewish family worshipping. The house stood beneath a large Aanjili (Wild Jack) tree. Moved by both the family’s devotion and the location of their residence, St. Thomas is believed to have named the family “Amen Anikkal.” Over many years, this name slowly changed in pronunciation and became Ammiyanikkal.

Our family tradition also says that by the tenth century, the Ammiyanikkal family was one of the three well-known Christian families – Aakkal, Arakkal and Ammiyanikkal – who settled along the banks of the Meenachil River. These families played an important role in the growth of the Christian community in central Travancore.

Ammiyanikkal to Madathiparambil

Many generations later, one of the descendants of the Ammiyanikkal family bought property from a Brahmin family known as Madathil. In Kerala, it was common for families to take the name of their ancestral home or property. From then on, the family became known as Madathiparambil.

The Origin of the Kalayathinal Name

In the seventeenth century, another important change took place. A member of the Madathiparambil family bought land that was traditionally connected with a Kalayam, a large earthen or metal pot used in ceremonies and daily life.

Because of this, the family came to be known as Kalayathinal.

The name comes from two Malayalam words:

Kalayam – a traditional earthen or metal pot.
Thinal (also called Thil or Thara) – a place or piece of land.

Together, Kalayathinal means “the place of the ceremonial pot.”

The three family names – Ammiyanikkal, Madathiparambil and Kalayathinal – tell the story of our family’s journey through history. Each name marks an important stage in our family’s life, shaped by faith, land ownership and community life.

For many generations, members of the Kalayathinal family have served society through farming, education, business, public service and many other professions. More importantly, they have lived by the values passed down by their ancestors – faith in God, honesty, unity, hard work, kindness and service to others.

Our Recorded Family History

The stories about St. Thomas the Apostle and the origin of the Ammiyanikkal family are based on family tradition that has been carefully passed down through many generations. While these stories are an important part of our heritage, they should be understood as family traditions rather than recorded historical facts.

The earliest written records of the Kalayathinal family begin with Mathu and his wife Mariam, who was born in 1824.

They had five children – four sons and one daughter.

Their eldest son, Mathai, born in 1846, married a bride from the Moothedathu family of Bharananganam and settled there.
Their second son, Mathu, remained at the ancestral home and continued the Kalayathinal family line.
Their third son, Devasia, married from the Kochuplackal family and settled at his wife’s ancestral home.
Their only daughter, born in 1864, married into the Kuzhikuthyany family.
Their youngest son, Fr. Abraham, born in 1858, was widely known as Abraham Kathanar. He was a respected priest, and his Ittikkattil (cot) is still kept in the visitors’ room of St. Mary’s Church, Bharananganam, as a reminder of his faithful service.

From these ancestors, the Kalayathinal family has continued to grow over the years while holding firmly to its Christian faith and family values.

കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം

കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ളതും അർത്ഥവത്തായതുമായ ഒരു യാത്രയാണ്. ഇത് കേരളത്തിലെ മാർത്തോമാ ക്രൈസ്തവ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രവുമായി അടുത്ത ബന്ധമുള്ളതാണ്. നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ കഥ തലമുറകളിലൂടെ വാമൊഴിയായും കുടുംബരേഖകളിലൂടെയും എഴുത്തുപരമായ രേഖകളിലൂടെയും കൈമാറപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. നമ്മുടെ പൂർവ്വികരുടെ ശക്തമായ വിശ്വാസവും ഐക്യവും ജീവിതമൂല്യങ്ങളും ഈ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഫലിക്കുന്നു.

നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബപാരമ്പര്യം

കുടുംബപാരമ്പര്യമനുസരിച്ച്, കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ വേരുകൾ ഏകദേശം 2,000 വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ കുടുംബത്തിലേക്കാണ് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നത്.

അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ എന്ന പേര് എങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ടായെന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് കുടുംബത്തിൽ ഒരു പഴയ കഥയുണ്ട്.

വിശുദ്ധ തോമാശ്ലീഹ കേരളത്തിൽ സുവിശേഷപ്രഘോഷണ യാത്ര നടത്തിയിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് ഒരു സന്ധ്യയിൽ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തുകൂടി നടക്കുമ്പോൾ, സമീപത്തെ ഒരു വീട്ടിൽ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ആളുകൾ “ആമേൻ” എന്ന് ആവർത്തിച്ച് പറയുന്നത് അദ്ദേഹം കേട്ടു. ആരാണ് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് അറിയാൻ അദ്ദേഹം ആ വീട്ടിൽ കയറിയപ്പോൾ അവിടെ ഒരു യഹൂദ കുടുംബം ആരാധന നടത്തുന്നതായി കണ്ടു. ആ വീട് ഒരു വലിയ ആഞ്ഞിലിമരത്തിന്റെ ചുവട്ടിലായിരുന്നു.

ആ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ഭക്തിയും അവരുടെ താമസസ്ഥലവും കണ്ട വിശുദ്ധ തോമാശ്ലീഹ, ആ കുടുംബത്തിന് “ആമേൻ ആനിക്കൽ” എന്ന പേര് നൽകിയെന്നാണ് കുടുംബപാരമ്പര്യം പറയുന്നത്. കാലക്രമേണ ഈ പേര് ഉച്ചാരണത്തിൽ മാറ്റം വന്ന് അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ എന്നായി മാറി.

കുടുംബപാരമ്പര്യമനുസരിച്ച്, പത്താം നൂറ്റാണ്ടോടെ മീനച്ചിൽ നദിയുടെ തീരത്ത് താമസമുറപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ മൂന്ന് ക്രൈസ്തവ കുടുംബങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായിരുന്നു അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ കുടുംബം. മറ്റ് രണ്ട് കുടുംബങ്ങൾ ആക്കൽ എന്നും അറക്കൽ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. മധ്യതിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ ക്രൈസ്തവ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വളർച്ചയിൽ ഈ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ പ്രധാന പങ്കുവഹിച്ചു.

അമ്മിയാനിക്കലിൽ നിന്ന് മഠത്തിപ്പറമ്പിലിലേക്ക്

പല തലമുറകൾക്കുശേഷം, അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരാൾ മഠത്തിൽ എന്ന ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു ഭൂമി വാങ്ങി.

കേരളത്തിൽ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ അവരുടെ പാരമ്പര്യവീട്ടിന്റെയോ സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെയോ പേര് കുടുംബപ്പേരായി സ്വീകരിക്കുന്ന പതിവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ഈ കുടുംബം മഠത്തിപ്പറമ്പിൽ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടാൻ തുടങ്ങി.

കലയത്തിനാൽ എന്ന പേരിന്റെ ഉദ്ഭവം

പതിനേഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന മാറ്റം സംഭവിച്ചു.

മഠത്തിപ്പറമ്പിൽ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരാൾ, കലയം എന്ന വലിയ മൺപാത്രമോ ലോഹപാത്രമോ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന സ്ഥലവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഭൂമി വാങ്ങി. ചടങ്ങുകളിലും ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതത്തിലും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന ഈ കലയത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ കുടുംബം പിന്നീട് കലയത്തിനാൽ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടു.

കലയത്തിനാൽ എന്ന പേര് രണ്ട് മലയാള വാക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്:

കലയം – പരമ്പരാഗതമായ മൺപാത്രം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ലോഹപാത്രം.
തിനാൽ (തിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ തറ എന്നും പറയുന്നു) – സ്ഥലം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഭൂമി.

അങ്ങനെ കലയത്തിനാൽ എന്നതിന് “കലയമുള്ള സ്ഥലം” അല്ലെങ്കിൽ “കലയവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഭൂമി” എന്ന അർത്ഥമാണ്.

അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ, മഠത്തിപ്പറമ്പിൽ, കലയത്തിനാൽ എന്നീ മൂന്ന് കുടുംബപ്പേരുകളും നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രയാത്രയിലെ പ്രധാന ഘട്ടങ്ങളെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. വിശ്വാസവും ഭൂമിയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയും സമൂഹജീവിതവുമാണ് ഈ മാറ്റങ്ങൾക്ക് പിന്നിൽ.

പല തലമുറകളായി കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങൾ കൃഷി, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, വ്യാപാരം, പൊതുസേവനം തുടങ്ങി വിവിധ മേഖലകളിൽ സമൂഹത്തിന് സേവനം ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു. അതിലുപരി, ദൈവവിശ്വാസം, സത്യസന്ധത, ഐക്യം, കഠിനാധ്വാനം, സ്നേഹം, മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കുള്ള സേവനം എന്നീ പൂർവ്വികരുടെ മൂല്യങ്ങൾ അവർ ജീവിതത്തിൽ പാലിച്ചുവരുന്നു.

രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെട്ട കുടുംബചരിത്രം

വിശുദ്ധ തോമാശ്ലീഹയെയും അമ്മിയാനിക്കൽ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവത്തെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള കഥകൾ തലമുറകളിലൂടെ കൈമാറിയ കുടുംബപാരമ്പര്യത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ളതാണ്. ഇവ നമ്മുടെ പൈതൃകത്തിന്റെ വിലപ്പെട്ട ഭാഗമാണെങ്കിലും, രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെട്ട ചരിത്രസത്യങ്ങൾ എന്നതിലുപരി കുടുംബപാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായാണ് മനസ്സിലാക്കേണ്ടത്.

കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെട്ട ചരിത്രം മാത്തുവിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യയായ മറിയത്തിലും നിന്നാണ് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. മറിയം 1824-ൽ ജനിച്ചു.

അവർക്ക് അഞ്ച് മക്കളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു – നാല് ആൺമക്കളും ഒരു മകളും.

മൂത്തമകൻ മത്തായി (1846-ൽ ജനനം) ഭരണങ്ങാനത്തെ മൂത്തേടത്ത് കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച് അവിടെ താമസമാക്കി.
രണ്ടാമത്തെ മകൻ മാത്തു പാരമ്പര്യവീട്ടിൽ തന്നെ താമസിച്ച് കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബപരമ്പര തുടർന്നു.
മൂന്നാമത്തെ മകൻ ദേവസ്യ കൊച്ചുപ്ലാക്കൽ കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച് ഭാര്യയുടെ പാരമ്പര്യവീട്ടിൽ താമസമാക്കി.
ഏകമകൾ (1864-ൽ ജനനം) കുഴിക്കുത്തിയാനി കുടുംബത്തിലേക്ക് വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു.
ഇളയമകൻ ഫാ. അബ്രാഹം (1858-ൽ ജനനം), അബ്രാഹം കത്തനാർ എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധനായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം ആദരണീയനായ ഒരു വൈദികനായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഈട്ടിക്കട്ടിൽ ഇന്നും ഭരണങ്ങാനം സെന്റ് മേരീസ് ദേവാലയത്തിലെ സന്ദർശകമുറിയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിശ്വസ്തസേവനത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയായി സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഈ പൂർവ്വികരിൽ നിന്ന് ആരംഭിച്ച കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബം വർഷങ്ങളായി വളർന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. അതോടൊപ്പം ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസവും കുടുംബമൂല്യങ്ങളും ഇന്നും ഉറച്ചുനിൽക്കുന്നു.

മുന്നോട്ടുള്ള യാത്ര

നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബയോഗത്തിൽ ഒന്നിച്ചുകൂടുമ്പോൾ, പൂർവ്വികരുടെ ത്യാഗങ്ങളെയും വിശ്വാസത്തെയും കഠിനാധ്വാനത്തെയും നന്ദിയോടെ നാം ഓർക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ന് നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബം ഉറച്ചുനിൽക്കുന്ന അടിത്തറ അവർ പണിതതാണ്.

ഈ അമൂല്യമായ പൈതൃകം സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയും അതേ സ്നേഹത്തോടും അഭിമാനത്തോടും ബഹുമാനത്തോടും കൂടി വരും തലമുറകൾക്ക് കൈമാറുകയും ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് ഇപ്പോൾ നമ്മുടെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമാണ്.

കലയത്തിനാൽ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം നമ്മുടെ ഓരോ കുടുംബാംഗത്തിനും എന്നും പ്രചോദനമായിരിക്കട്ടെ. നാം ഐക്യത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കാനും, വിശ്വാസത്തിൽ ഉറച്ചുനിൽക്കാനും, തലമുറകളായി നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബത്തെ നയിച്ച മൂല്യങ്ങൾ ജീവിതത്തിൽ പാലിക്കാനും ഈ ചരിത്രം നമ്മെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കട്ടെ.
